The Pantheon Inaugural: Community Input, Part II

Oct 5, 2012

As the weeks melt in to days, the time for competition draws near. The Pantheon Inaugural is on the horizon, and is sure to feature as an important date on the calendar of all Australian Counter-Strike: Global Offensive teams. In our last engagement with the community we asked you, the community, which maps you wanted to see played in The Pantheon Inaugural. With polling closed and the results tallied, there has been a resoundingly clear message sent regarding which maps will feature in our $2000 online tournament, thanks to Mwave.com.au, Western Digital and Shuttle.

Official map pool

  • de_dust2_se
  • de_inferno_se
  • de_mirage_csgo
  • de_nuke_ve
  • de_train_se

The maps de_nuke_ve, and de_train_se received a resounding 87% of votes, with the community sending a strong message regarding the maps they want to see. The map pool featured in our tournament mimics recent global trends, with the same maps selected for use in the Electronic Sports World Cup’s CS:GO tournaments. As the game continues to receive constant updates, I am sure that there will be many more maps to consider in light of future tournaments.

While we continue to engage with community opinion, there are still a few contentious issues on which we wish to hear communal voice. The next matter for polling regards the use of Molotov cocktails (or Incendiary grenades for CT). With Dreamhack Valencia and SteelSeries GO at IOS moving to ban the use of the grenade, both ESL worldwide and ESWC announcing that they will that they will allow the use of grenade in all forms of competition. We at Pantheon want to know what you think? Should the Molotov/Incendiary grenade be banned from use in The Pantheon Inaugural?

Should Molotov/Incendiary grenades be BANNED from use?

Voting closes at midnight (AEDT) on Thursday 11th of October 2012, so make your voice heard! Remember all participants in the Pantheon Inaugural will have the opportunity to practice these maps on their free server leading up to the competition. There will be a post regarding the official tournament ruleset in the coming days, so stay tuned to Pantheon ESports. I feel it should be allowed – let’s evolve CS, not try and stick it into the box where it once lived.

    That’s a personal opinion rec! :P

The reason people are hating on it is because it just doesn’t fit in CS. The decoy grenade is a brand new addition to the game, people aren’t whinging about it – Why? Because it fits very nicely into the way the game is meant to be played and actually allows for options to be explored. With the IG, it narrows down choices for players to make and the execution skill involved for good molotov placement is virtually non-existent. This is a no-brainer!

‘Evolving CS’ is a great sentiment in theory rec, and molotovs most definitely bring in ‘change’ – but not for the better. They severely restrict the flow and pace of gameplay that T’s were once able to dictate, all but removing the possibility of rushes. This limits the strategic possibilities and actually harms the competitive game, not benefits it. T’s are forced to play a certain way, as opposed to being given the choice of playing the way that they feel suits the round/match best.

There is also literally no counter to them (other than not going in them). They can not be countered like a flash by turning away, you can not walk through them like a smoke or position yourself to see through them, and they can not be dodged like a gren… once they’re down you literally have to sit there waiting for 8 seconds till they dissipate. They are a skill-less item to use that cannot be countered via skill, and have no place in counter-strike.

If you feel they belong – feel free to explain how they actually benefit the competitive gameplay (and at the very least, how any possible benefits you may come up with outweigh the incredible amount of negatives they bring with them).

This goes back to an argument I made earlier on this site where I said that there’s a purist approach to competitive play that needs to be followed for CSGO to succeed. I personally don’t think Molotovs have a place in CS but attitudes towards rules from players and organisations tends to change, we’ve seen it before where an international tournament will enforce a certain rule across all its national preliminaries and soon after most of the other local events begin to follow the same ruleset. We’re in a sensitive period with CSGO, it attempts to bridge CS players from 1.6 and CSS, but also offer an accessible FPS alternative
to COD and BF and players from other platforms, and I don’t think it can do both with disruptive elements like the Molotov.

In any case, Pantheon will be looking to engage community input on how we should approach these rules and these discussions are what will help other users choose how to vote.

I accidentally, in a rush, voted NO because the email sent out was titled as “Should molovs be used in our CSGO Inaugural?”

I like Molotov/Incendiary grenades but if the majority of the community doesn’t want it then get rid of it :)

I swear the question has been changed or the answers swapped. Last time I checked the votes were majority for people banning the molotov

    Ban them please,

Single elim $1,250 on the line tournament and you want to allow something as imbalanced as the ridiculous molotov grenade?

Sense is not made. The grenades slow the game down a lot and lessens excitement for spectators and shoutcasters. I strongly advice tournament organisers to ignore molotov grenades and stick to the CS we all know and love
